What Is: Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a term many people have probably heard before. What we aim to do is explain it in more detail via this glossary article. We’ll tell you everything you need to know about affiliate marketing, and how you can get started.

The best place to start this piece is with a definition of affiliate marketing. So, what is it?

Affiliate marketing is a way for you to earn revenue by promoting other people’s products/services. You advertise and market their products on your website, and earn a commission fee when people make a purchase directly through your promotion. Normally, you register with companies to become part of their affiliate program. They’ll give you an affiliate link, which helps determine that people make a purchase through you. If you promote the link and someone clicks it, the company knows it’s your affiliate link, and if the person that clicked the link buys something, you get paid.

There are three parties at play here; the advertiser, publisher, and consumer. The advertiser is the business that’s running the affiliate program and providing links for the publisher (you) to use. Of course, the consumer is the person clicking the links and spending their money. It’s a very simple concept, and a great way to make money from your site.

Affiliate Marketing Vs. Google Adsense

So, we’ve established that affiliate marketing is a way you can make money from your website. But, how does it stack up when compared to another popular revenue maker, Adsense? For those that don’t know, Adsense is an advertising network run by Google that allows users to place adverts on their site and earn money from them. It’s similar to affiliate marketing in the sense that you only earn money when someone clicks on the advert. In this scenario, advertisers pay to have their adverts generated by Adsense, and every click means money goes to you and to Google.

But, is affiliate marketing better than this? The truth is, there are many arguments that are for affiliate marketing over Adsense. One of the biggest ones revolves around ad blockers. A lot of internet users will install an ad blocker on their web browser. This prevents them from seeing any ads as they browse the web. So, if your site is full of Adsense ads, you’re immediately not making any money when someone with an ad blocker visits your site. However, affiliate marketing is done via links, which ad blockers don’t block. So, they’ll see your link, meaning they could easily click it and earn revenue for you.

People are also more reluctant to click on ads over affiliate links. This modern generation of internet users doesn’t like having adverts thrown in their face telling them to ‘click here’. The benefit of affiliate marketing is that you get to talk about products and promote them. Plus, you should be promoting things that relate to your website and that you personally enjoy and can vouch for. This means the things are geared towards your target audience, and it’s almost like you’re giving a recommendation or review. Consumers like this, and it makes them more likely to click your links.

Furthermore, you have the potential to negotiate a commission fee with affiliates, but you can’t negotiate a fee with Google. Therefore, you could earn more money by taking a bigger cut from affiliate marketing.

Why is affiliate marketing used?

People use affiliate marketing as it’s a great way for businesses to advertise their stuff, and for people to earn revenue via their website. It’s a win-win situation, and publishers can boost their site by being an affiliate. If you get in bed with a big brand, it suddenly makes your site seem more authoritative and important, which can improve its perception.

How can you get started?

Getting started with affiliate marketing begins with the construction of your website. You should build a site based on something that interests you. This could be a blog, or it could even be a website where you sell your own products. Either way, create your site and then go looking for affiliate programs.

The key is working with companies that relate to your website and promoting things that make sense. For example, if you have a fitness blog, it makes sense to try and register for affiliate programs with companies that sell fitness related products. This way you promote things that are valuable to your audience and can help them out. Thus, there’s more chance they will make purchases through your links.

Contact companies and try to get in their program and work something out with them. They provide you with an affiliate link, and you just have to post it in your site content.

Affiliate marketing is very effective and incredibly easy to get started. If you’re looking for a great way to earn revenue, then you should consider this.
